Hello K1 Families,
Here are some activities for the week ending 5/22/20. We will continue our “Things that Grow” unit this week. Literacy: Story- “I Heard Said the Bird” by Polly Berriends https://youtu.be/O0GwtaMhE0M Questions about the story: The animals in the book were wondering what kind of animal the NEW ONE would be. Only the boy knew that the NEW ONE was a baby boy. How do you think he knew? (help your child guess that the baby is his brother) At the beginning of the story there are some people in front of the house behind the hare and the goose. What do you think those people are doing? (bringing a baby home from the hospital) Religion: I Can Share-: Help children to discover that sharing can bring happiness to self and others. Number: 12 Have children practice writing the number 12. Practice “writing” number 12 with your finger on a tray or plate filled with salt or make the number 12 out of playdough. Children should practice counting 12 objects, can they find 12 objects around the house or outside? Letter: Zz Have children practice writing upper and lowercase Z. Practice “writing” upper and lowercase Z with your finger on a tray or plate full of salt or make the number 12 out of playdough. How many items can you think of or find that begin with the letter Z? Science: 1.Plant a seed in soil or 2. Place a seed in a clear plastic bag with a wet paper towel around it and tape it to a window. This will allow you to observe the seed parts and what happens when the seed starts to sprout. (beans seeds work well!) Math: Measuring with standard or non-standard units of measurement 1. Help children measure their height with a tape measure. Discuss the numbers on the tape measure and standard units of measurement or 2. Help children measure themselves, a family member, doll or stuffed animal with a non-standard unit of measurement such as blocks, Duplos, shoes, etc. Support children as they count and measure how many blocks, shoes, etc. long or tall each person/object is. Art: Pressing Flowers or Leaves Help children snip the blossoms off of flowers. Support them as they arrange blossoms on one half of a sheet of paper. Children fold the other half of the paper to cover the blossoms and place them between the pages of a heavy book for 4 to 5 days. After flowers are pressed and dried, help children arrange them on construction paper and secure them with glue or a glue stick. Songs: Open Shut Them, Five Little Ducks, Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, I'm a Little Teapot, If You're Happy, The Green Grass Grows and Bingo. We hope you are well, Mrs. Powers, Ms. Johnson and Ms. Tempinski
